RE: CDL

Pearlie, because I have a CDL and I haven't had a ticket in over 5 years, and I recently took the Smith System safe driving course my insurance company (the guys with the lizard on TV) lowered my insurance $435.00 so it does pay to have one but it's not required. John

RE: Plumbing safe for winter rving?

Coach, I've always winterized mine Adventurer in the past, but I'm going to camp your around this season. When it gets really cold I'm going to keep the heat on and the hot water tank heater on. The dealer that sold me my adventurer told me he's sold several to people in Alaska that use them year around. John

We have a debit card thru our bank and do all of our banking over the net. It's real convenient for us because we monitor or account several times daily. John

I had a 50 amp plug in, installed at the side of our house many years ago and our coach is plugged in when it's not out on the road. John

RE: safety chain or cable???????

This might answer your question all semi's and dolly converters and trailers use chains over cables! There's a reason for this it's called strength. Rooster

RE: Dealer Closure

Jim, I take my motorhome there for limited service and it's my opinion that there limited service is what failed to keep there doors open. Because there located right off the water there in Poulsbo the EPA wouldn't allow them permits for oil changes in motors or generators. No power steering or transmission fluid changes and the same with cooling system changes. And I will say that Brian and Larry run a A-1 repair shop and parts department. In this mornings paper it says there folding that one dealership because it's so hard to get loans and that RV sales are down 38% nation wide from this time last year. The economy is great in this area due to Naval Yard Bremerton, Wa. (the only large U.S. Naval ship drydock in the Western Pacific). Also there's the Bangor,Wa. Sub Base, Undersea Warfare Base at Keyport, Wa. and up by you Jim the ammo depot for all the Naval Ships at Indian Island, Wa. and finally the big fuel Depot at Manchester, Wa. plus many other Federal and State jobs in this area plus the private sector. If loans are so hard to get then why isn't there other 6 stores shutting down? Rooster

RE: Winnebago's Lost Customers

We have a Winnebago WGO-35-U very large closet that slides in and out and it's located over the rear dual tires. I wouldn't want a rear closet due to the bounce effect that coaches get while riding on concrete or driving over bumps. If you want head room I've never owned one, but walked thru an Alfa See Ya one time and they have more head room than an other coach I've been in. I'm 6' 3" and still had plenty of head room above me. John

RE: ABS Light Stays on - Freightliner Chassis

Jon, welcome to the post. On many of the different semi's that I drive for my bosses company half the fleet has those ABS lights coming on. Our mechanics called up the manufactures and they told us not to worry about it. I've driven thousands of miles with those lights and no problems at all. A lot of times when I pulling doubles (two sets of trailers), the outside ABS light (on the side of the trailer) will come on and stay on all day and it doesn't effect anything. I disregard them anymore. When the light comes on it's telling you that your braking system is working. If the light annoys you then you'll have to fix it. John

RE: Motor Home Wind Deflectors

I think they are there to clean up the roof line so those nasty looking A/C's, vents, etc don't show so much. Calpine, your probably right! I would have never thought of that. And if you can afford the coach that I seen then carrying the extra weight above so the dirt don't show wouldn't matter. John

Motor Home Wind Deflectors

I was on my way to work a few mornings ago and I passed a brand new Marathon Coach that had front, rear, and side wind deflectors. The front and rear wind deflectors were just high enough where they were above the roof air conditioners the side deflectors were only about 6 inches in height. Does anyone know if they help with fuel milage? Why I ask is my boss has them on his semi trucks (above cab) and they don't make to much difference in fuel milage except when the trucks are moving on flat road for long distances. I'm assuming this will be the new thing for motorhomes in years to come. John

RE: Hankook tires

Seems some people think everything is junk if it is not what they own.The poster was #1. asking if anyone heard of them! #2. For your opinion! If we never heard of them how can they be junk? When I say I never heard of them I'm not saying there junk. I'm in the trucking business for over 40 years, and have owned hundreds of cars since I was 16 years old. Someone posted me there on new Fords I haven't owned a Ford since 1979, the year the transmissions would go into reverse while in the park position. And Ford wouldn't fix them and the government backed Ford since repairing them would cause Ford to go bankrupt! Bless Ford they sent me a warning sticker to put on my sun visor warning me of something I already knew. Wouldn't that qualify as junk? John
Roosteer,
I would imagine that you have knowledge there are many trucking companies that run "off-shore" tires. I see plenty of them sitting in L.A. traffic on both the trailers and tractors....Chuck your are correct and I see most of them on ship container frames (we call the containers "cans") We had a Sealand can in our truck yard the other day and the can I was looking at had tires on it called New Pride? I've never heard of them either? Rooster

RE: Interesting Statement from Caterpillar Service

Pat, the trucking company I work for put idle shut off switches on all there diesel engines (we run 5 different diesel engines) Many of our smaller delivery tractors have Cat 3126 in them. Our shop uses 30W Chevron Delo motor oil and our shop overfills every crankcase on all there Cat motors big and small by one gallon. This was advised by Cat several years ago after we experienced some scorched bearings. The Cat house said overfilling the crankcase by one gallon would not hurt anything in there at all he said there's plenty of room in there. Never had one engine experience scorched bearings after overfilling the crankcases. Also our shop many years ago went from a 10,000 mile oil change heavy use on all engines to 20,000 mile oil change. I was very leery of this practice but we haven't had any issue's with all our engines after changing over to this schedule ten years ago. Thought you might be interested in this! John

RE: Is the 190 HP Cummins enough Horsepower/Torque?

Stan, in my opinion you can get by on flat land, but you would be underpowered in mountainous regions. Climbing large hills you'll find your exhaust is going faster than you are. You'll need to bump the engine up if possible. Talk to a diesel shop before you buy to see if it can be done. John

RE: SEA EAGLE Inflatable boat

Congratulations on your retirement Jim! Here in Washington State last year I seen a guy with a motorhome with his tow vehicle in tow behind the motorhome and he had a boat and trailer hooked up to his tow vehicle. If you have a combination license and brakes on everything it's legal in this State. If you have a 40 foot or longer motorhome you may also have to get an LCV (Long Combination Vehicle) license, this license states you have experience pulling long vehicles in combination. Sorry, I don't know much about fishing or boats! I'm a golfer. John

RE: EZ Pass transponder

Jim, in Washington State we have transponders (Good To Go) that are made out of plastic there 2"X2" and the whole surface of the transponder sticks to the windshield. Also once they come off the windshield there invalid. John
